Setting

Camp character

Olifants is a main rest camp in rugged central-northern veld. The official activity and facilities pages place the visitor base around a lookout-oriented landscape, a restaurant, trails and a dedicated day-visitor picnic area.

Accommodation format

SANParks lists Olifants among the current Main Rest Camps. The developed camp base includes a restaurant, cafeteria, shop, fuel, communal kitchens, conference venue and resident and day-visitor services.

Activities

Named activities and interpretation

The current page lists Astronomy Game Drives, guided walks, trained-guide game drives, Bush Braais and Breakfasts, the pre-booked Olifants Wilderness Trail, the Olifants Backpacking Trail and mountain biking. The park activity links should be checked for current bookings and conditions.

Wildlife

What SANParks records for the area

SANParks says the Olifants area hosts most of Kruger’s classic larger game and that elephant are common. Baboon, vervet monkey, fruit bats and thick-tailed bush babies are associated with the camp, while lion and leopard are regularly seen on drives.

Landscape

Vegetation and setting

Olifants is set in rugged veld on rhyolite and basalt soils, with Lowveld cluster-leaf, raisin bush and mopane. SANParks also highlights aloe diversity, a sesame bush near the filling station, seasonal sjambok-pod and weeping-boerboon flowers, and tree euphorbia.

Facilities

Current camp facilities

The official page lists reception information, restaurant, conference venue, cafeteria, shop, laundromat, filling station, communal kitchens, cutlery-and-plates hampers, basic first aid, a day-visitor picnic area with gas braais for hire, limited DSTV locations and cellular reception. It notes no ATM facility.

Access

Approach and gate orientation

The Phalaborwa Gate route runs via Polokwane, the R71, Tzaneen and Phalaborwa. SANParks places Olifants 83 km from the gate and estimates six to seven hours from central Gauteng to the gate and about three hours from gate to camp.

Planning

What to confirm before travel

The wilderness, backpacking, mountain-biking and astronomy activities are distinct from an ordinary camp visit. Confirm pre-booking, weather sensitivity and current departure arrangements, and allow substantial time for the 83 km internal approach.
