Mopani is listed by SANParks as a main rest camp. Its facilities include a restaurant, bar, cafeteria, shop, pool, fuel, conference venue and day-visitor area, distinguishing it from the park’s smaller resident-only camps.
The current page lists a Sunset Drive–Boma Braai combination, guided walks, trained-guide game drives, Bush Braais and Breakfasts, an in-camp trail walk, the Shipandani sleep-over Bird Hide 3 km away, the Tropic of Capricorn 12 km north, Pioneer Dam Bird Hide 4 km away and wildlife films during reception office hours.
SANParks notes that the dense mopane veld can be more productive than its reputation suggests. From the camp lookout or nearby ladies-bar balcony, the page records hippo, waterbuck, impala, warthog, elephant, buffalo and occasional lion; the surrounding Nshawu pans and Tropic of Capricorn loop are also highlighted for viewing.
Mopani marks a transition between granite/gneiss soils to the west and basalt soils to the east. Mixed bushwillow, silver cluster-leaf, tree and shrub mopane, apple-leaf, large knob-thorn, tamboti and leadwood all feature in the official vegetation account.
The official list includes reception information, public telephone, restaurant, conference venue, ladies bar, cafeteria, pool, shop, mini ATM in the restaurant, laundromat, filling station, basic first aid, day-visitor picnic area, car wash, limited DSTV locations and cellular reception.
The official route runs via Polokwane, the R71, Tzaneen, Phalaborwa and Phalaborwa Gate. SANParks estimates six to seven hours from central Gauteng to the gate and about three hours from the gate to Mopani, which is approximately 74 km inside.
Mopani’s listed hides, loop, sleep-over activity and Tropic of Capricorn stop have different locations and booking implications. Check each activity’s current availability, allow for the long internal drive, and do not treat nearby points as camp facilities.
